The Maritimes was the most heavily fortified and defended are of British North America a the time; therefore the Americans concentrated on the more lightly defended area of Upper Canada which was a sparsely populated frontier area at that time. Furthermore for much of the war the British Navy held control of the sea. The much smaller American navy was used defensively and for raiding, but would not have been able to mount a significant attack on the Maritimes by sea.
