Possible causes:
If you have Adobe Acrobat installed, and pdf files open up in notepad, then the problem could be the file is a txt file renamed as .pdf. Or more likely it could be the pdf file type is registered to notepad.

You can fix or check this by opening my documents, select folder options - File Type Tab, scroll to PDF, and click edit and manually change to open with acrobat.exe instead of notepad.
