It's an indication of inefficiency in the catalytic converter.
Could just be the rapid increase in fuel due to the load of going up hill. Normally a computer would adjust the fuel air ratio to keep it running efficiently, but some modified vehicles will allow too much fuel to be used causing an overheating condition in the converter, it smells like rotten eggs.
Also your converter may be getting clogged and be in need of replacement.
