Here's s bit of information about why and where the breed of dogs called "Shih Tzu" occurred The name translates to (or its etymological origin is) "Lion Dog". A little less than a century ago, Shih Tzus were often called "Chrysanthemums". It is one of the oldest of all dog breeds. Well, over a thousand years plus ago, the Shih Tzus almost became extinct. Therefore, all of the existing Shih Tzus are descended from a small pack consisting of the seven males and the seven females that survived the near extinction. There's a lot more info available about these "Lion Dogs" but their origin is answered here. As to the "why" part of the question, they were used for hunting and guarding.
