Why won't 88 chevy pickup with automatic transmission shift into higher gear?

If it will not shift into od but will shift into 3rd or drive then you are in the beginning stages of losing your 3-4 clutch pack. If it will only go first then second and nothing else, you have already burned up your 3-4. Rebuild is the only cure just did it myself today to a 1993. The 4L60E and the 700 r are famous for this. Most rebuilds typically last only a couple of years, the real solution is to convert it to a 4L80e which requires shortening the drive shaft and getting a wiring harness adapter and making a new cross member for support.
