first you need to change your transmission filter and oil(make sur oil is before changing) when oil get gets real dirty it let your tranny solenoid dont work properly. warning! when you change your oil you need need to jack both wheels up off the ground , put car in drive and make sure tranny is going into overdrive, some times it takes awhile before solenoid lubricated and start working properly

A common problem with alot of Volvo's is the Overdrive. Basically the high gear. If it wont shift into high gear it means that the "Overdrive" is activated and won't shift into high gear. You need to see if there is a little upwards pointing arrow on your Dashboard Cluster. If there is then you need to replace your Overdrive Solenoid.
