Before searching for problems with the box itself, it might be worth considering this: A solenoid in the shift stick mechanism operates a pin that prevents the shift stick being moved into reverse (or in or out of park); this takes a voltage feed from the dashboard. Check your fuses in the internal and underhood boxes; you may be in for a nice & cheaply-resolved surprise. This issue does not throw a fault code to my knowledge.
