No. Data on CDs and DVDs are laid out in rings. Think of the rings as the groove on an old phonograph record. The "grooves" on a DVD are much tighter than those of a CD. The laser in a typical CD player would not be able to read them correctly.

The spinning reader is also what is used to read DVD's and therefore will read DVD's. A DVD player does not need a blueray laser because the disc can be read without one. If you want a movie in HD but you don't want to buy a whole new player, you can buy a HDVD (HD DVD).A normal DVD player will read that.

it depends. are you using a DVD/ CD player? or are you using just a plain CD player? if ur using the CD player, it wont work because it doesn't have a screen. if your using a DVD/ CD player, it will work just fine. A DVD will not play in a CD-only player -- even a CD-ROM drive that does not have DVD hardware built in. The stepper motors and lenses for a DVD-ROM drive are far more precise than a CD drive, and the CD drive cannot physically read the tiny information on the DVD surface.
