Brake light switch might need to be replaced. Simpler answer would be a blown fuse.
The brake light bulbs ar removed from the rear of the light assy . Take it off of the body.
i have a 2002 montero sport i had the same issue i replaced the brake pads first no luck 2 days later i had to replace the alternator after that both lights went off
the brake switch at the pedal is stuck or out of adjustment.
brake light switch, may be located above the brake pedal where it mounts under the dash, did you find any parts laying on the floor ? No I did not

1. Burned out bulb. Easiest to fix / find. OR 2. Fuse blown. OR 3. Trailer Fuse blown (yes it effects the tail / brake lights) OR 4. Ground wire not grounding. Hardest to fix / find.

Check the bulbs they are double filamented with smaller being for brake lights
pull out on the end of the lights switch
pull out on the end of the lights switch
Assuming you mean brake lights, the brake light switch is broken or out of adjustment.
