If you have a very old car It could be doing what is called dieseling.
OR
The engine computer could be keeping it running to try to get it to cool off.
But with out knowing what car it is those are just guesses.
If the chip that tells the engine what to do overheats , the car will shut off. Most cars do not have such a devise.
It wil shut off.
That's called dieseling, and the main thing that causes it is improper ignition timing.
u can shut off a car while its in gear u just wont be able to get the key out without it being in park and the sterring wheel may lock but u can shut a car off with it in gear

The most common problem when a car's heater fan doesn't shut off when the car is shut off is that the resistor on the blower motor has gone bad. The fuse that powers the resistor should also be checked.
Car just shut off checked getting fuel cranks good just wont turn over
You need to replace the ignition switch. Too much play in it.
With the cylinder removed there is no easy way to turn the switch it would normally operate to the "off" position.
Could be for a number of reasons. Is it overheating? Some vehicles are designed to shut down automatically when the motor overheats in order to avoid blowing a gasket.
fill the radiator back up with water/coolant then start the car with the cap off and continue to fill it up as it is being sucked into the motor replace the cap and let the car warm up if it still gets hot shut it off and keep repeting till it wont accept water any more but the real question is why did it over heat but that's another subject right?
year of the carTHE YEAR OF THE CAR IS A 2000 OLDS INTRIQUE, WE CAN NOT GET A STICKER WITH THE LIGHT ON..ALSO IN MASS. Take a very small drillbit and pop the bulb , That's what one car lot use to do .
