It sounds like you have a standard transmission. When you depress the clutch to start the car, a solenoid is energized to operate the safety switch. This switch is the one that won't allow you to start the car without the clutch being down. If the battery is low, it's possible that there is not enough power to operate the solenoid. Most newer automatic transmissions have a safety system that requires pressing the brake to release a solenoid on the shifter. If the battery is low there is not enough power to actuate the solenoid.
do your brake lights work wen pressing brake . if not its the brake pedal sensor
if you mean it wont go into gear and it grinds like a sob but other gears still work synchronizers. if you mean the shifter is loose an cant find the gear anymore - linkage. if it wont go into any gear sounds like a clutch problem
there might be a short in the transmission wiring that might have happened when you swapped out the radio if it's stuck in third gear, that's probably the issue
my buick will not start ,gear shift will not move, no cranking sound, all I get is light on dashboard . horn works , headlights work, battery is new(less than 1 mth old) my buick will not start ,gear shift will not move, no cranking sound, all I get is light on dashboard . horn works , headlights work, battery is new(less than 1 mth old)
Do you mean that the car will not shift into first? The clutch is the left pedal on the floor and should work independently of which gear is selected. If the car will not shift into first the clutch may need to be replaced, transmission synchros or gear teeth for first gear could be damaged(chipped, missing or broken) or the shift selector shaft might need to be realigned and/or have it's bushings replaced.
get a new one
Would anyone have a clue what would cause a 1997 Dodge Caravan not to shift out of 1st gear, able to drive...just wont shift medlin317@comcast.net try changing the outputspeed sensor. I have a 2000 caravan with 193000 miles. It was doing same thing, change the sensor and now its work right. I thought I needed a new tranny.
battery is weak or the solenoid for the shift is bad
they have to be recycled and they wont work.
if you have some recent work done i would check to see if the shifter handle was bolted back one correctly,
Dead battery
