They are notorious for sticking in the closed position if the manual finger-lift latch pivots on the exterior handle get bound up from rust. You have to crawl inside the back and remove the interior panel to get at the latch mechanism and manually release the mechanism. Then when you have the door open take spray lube and soak the pivots, working the finger latch back and forth until it is free and pivots easily. It should work after all that.
The other possibility is that the electric lock mechanism either doesn't worked or is jammed. Same as above -- you have to remove the interior panel and check it out.

If the handle is broken, then you'll have to manually open it. If the locking mechanism is frozen, you will have to manually open it.
