Walter Cunningham Jr. won't take Miss Caroline's quarter because he comes from a family that is struggling financially, and accepting charity, even something as small as a quarter, goes against his principles of self-sufficiency and pride. He knows his family cannot pay back the debt, so he refuses to take what he cannot repay.
Walter Cunningham cannot accept the quarter from Miss Caroline because his family would not be able to pay her back. (Hes exremely poor) Scout explains this to Miss Caroline, that he is a "Cunningham" Since Miss Caroline is new to the town she did not understand and Scout explains to her that the Cunningham's don't take anything they can't pay back. (This happens on Page.20)
The Cunningham's don't have any money to pay back, so Walter won't take the quarter from Miss Caroline. Scout has to explain this to Miss Caroline
Scout blames Walter Cunningham for making her start her first day at school on the wrong foot by embarrassing her in front of her teacher, Miss Caroline, when he refuses to take a quarter for lunch money.
Miss Caroline offers Walter Cunningham a quarter for lunch when she tries to help him, not knowing that the Cunninghams do not accept charity. Scout tries to explain this to her, but Miss Caroline does not understand the social dynamics of Maycomb yet.
She gave a quarter to Walter Cunningham because she didn't know that he was poor and can not pay her back. Walter had lied to her about why he didn't have lunch, and she persisted on giving him the quarter. Scout defends Walter which embarrasses Miss Caroline. The second thing she did that day was command Burris Ewell to go home and take a bath. She listens to the students when they tell her he only comes on the first day of school. Miss Caroline made the mistake of reprimanding Scout for being literate, assuming she was trying to show off. She also mistakenly gave Walter Cunningham a quarter for lunch, not realizing the social repercussions it would have for him.
Scout is upset with Walter Cunningham because her teacher, Miss Caroline, doesn't understand that the Cunninghams are poor and can't afford lunch money. She is also upset when her classmate, Burris Ewell, insults Walter for accepting charity and being a "coward."
Walter Cunningham pours molasses all over his food, which Scout finds strange. When Scout criticizes him, Calpurnia scolds her and serves Walter extra food. Walter Cunningham gets embarrassed and thanks Atticus for the meal.
Miss Caroline hits Scout's hand with a ruler when she tries to stand up for Walter Cunningham during lunch.
He says that she's new to the town and to put herself in miss carolines position.
In "To Kill a Mockingbird," Scout tries to spare Walter Cunningham from embarrassment when she explains to her teacher, Miss Caroline, that Walter cannot accept money for lunch as he is too proud to be unable to repay it. This shows Scout's empathy and understanding of Walter's situation, as well as her attempt to prevent him from feeling ashamed in front of his classmates.
