Check bulbs - double filamented smaller is for stop lights and larger for tailights Check fuses
Check power to and operation of the stop light switch
Usually located at the upper end of the brake pedal under dash area
Don't know technical name but there is a multi-functional switch on your steering column that is tied in with the turn signal actuator. Whole unit is replaced as one. Parts house $350-400+. On line about $250+. I was told it would take about 1- 1 1/2 hours for a mechanic.
They are burned out.
Those tail lights could be the brake lights you are seeing and that would be a faulty brake light switch or the brake light switch is out of adjustment.
Check the brake light switch down on the brake pedal.
Brake light switch is broken or needs adjustment.
Check the brake light switch adjustment.
Brake Lights do not turn offUsually this is caused by the physical position of the brake light switch not being adjusted properly.

do your brake lights work wen pressing brake . if not its the brake pedal sensor

Sounds like a bad Brake Light Switch. It's located on the steering column.
Break lights come on when you step on the break, they do not come on when the head lights are turned on.
Had the same problem a few weeks back.Mileage on 1986 cutlass supreme was close to 400,000 KMS(Canada). Sorry to say transmission needs to be rebuilt.
