Could be a bunch of stuff, but some of the earlier Fieros had an issue with the shaft connected to clutch pedal bending which would cause the clutch to not fully disengage. When your car's not running you can shift gears all day without pushing in the clutch. Try that when your fiero's running and all you'll do is chew gears.

Chances are that your clutch is not FULLY disengaging the transmission when you are depressing the pedal. The clutch is hydraulic with a master and slave cylinder and a hydraulic hose connecting the two. It is basically the same type of system your brakes use. If you get air in the line due to either cylinder or the hose being faulty, it will feel as though the clutch is working but it is not. This can range from a complete clutch failure or just having the clutch "drag". Any force from on the flywheel at a stop will prevent you from being able to put the car in gear...
Check your fluids. But you may need a new transmission.
Check the fuel pressure on the Fiero to start with. It sounds like it could be starving for fuel.

because its like a plane when you go on cruise control it controls the speed and the gears but you have to control the way it goes it wont steer its if you let go of the steering wheel you will crash and you dont want to cause an accident
There is no idler pulley on this year Fiero so you must mean Idle Speed. It is most likely that if the idle is high and it wont slow down automatically, 1500 or so, that you have a cracked EGR pipe between the intake and the EGR valve. There are replacements available on line from companies like "The Fiero Store"
