there are several things that can cause this so start simple.
1.put in neutral try to start if no pull in clutch if this works it can be two things (1 bike may have a neutral and clutch safety switch or neutral switch is bad. also some have a side stand switch insure it is upright. on suzki both neutral switches of side stand can be bypassed by grounding the switch to a ground source.
2. is the battery fully charged (anything over 10vdc is fully charged if under try charging) also while you are doing this insure that the cables are are clean and tight
3.dose the battery hold a charge (in a voltage meter place the leads on the terminals turn the ignition if voltage drops 5vdc or below replace battery.)
4.As a side note excessive white on the terminals means that the battery is sulfate so again replace the battery
5.now is the fun stuff pull off the cylinder head cover and and place piston tdc (top dead center) you can do this by placing the bike on its center stand shift gears to first and you can now move the crank. you have to look at a manual or look up how the timing is set usually their is two hash mark one on each gear facing away from each other aligned with the cylinders. due to the fact the it changes from year to year model to model i will not go into setting the timing. also timing is not always easy so have fun and make sure you research and do not always accept the first answer you find on your search engine. there is alot of idiots.
6.now if all of this checks out then you could replace the main wire harness or test it but you would have detailed knowledge wire dighrams and the specs of resitiance ,voltage, voltage drop. this is including switches.
i should have said this early but pull pull the plugs and place the spark plugs place them on metal they should fire in not check plugs boot cable coils and igniter.
good luck hope this worked and please forgive my spelling.

Is the kickstand still down? The kickstand must be up in order for it to go into gear without dying.
