I purchased a '93 1 week ago with this result. The engine would start and run for appx. 2 seconds and die. When I would hook up the battery, the alarm system would go off. The problem was a door sensor for the security system. The system was disconnected by a mechanic. He worked on it appx. behind the left side of the glove box (after removing a lot of dashboard).
on the 4.0 jeep, if it cranks, but wont start, try replacing the crank sensor, located at the top rear of the engine, at the transmission
