Why would a 1997 Honda Civic LX 4-cylinder automatic lose power briefly to the point of about dying after driving about 30 feet when cold?

This is a tune up issue, stuff is dirty, like fuel injectors, ignition/plugs, PCV, air cleaner, tranny fluid etc. Stuff could be frozen, if you are really cold. Open your hood and love your car.

Yes. It is plug and play. You can use manual and automatic clusters in a manual, but you have to use automatic clusters in an automatic car.
