Why would a car crank but not start then start right up after towing it to the mechanic?

Several possible causes but here are the probables. A bad earth or loose wires, Flooded carb, or if it sounded like it was missing when cranked the could be the leads. Im not a mechanic but have worked on more cars than soft mick. Flooded sound favourite but then you need to find the cause to it flooding.
