It is a computer software program that allows you to do calculations, make charts and store information. It is much more powerful than a calculator. It is made up of a grid formed by columns and rows and making cells. Into these cells you can enter different things like text and dates, but mainly numbers. You can also put calculations into cells which use other numbers from other cells. A spreadsheet is huge, containing millions of cells and so letting you do lots of calculations. You can also do other things with it like drawing boxes and circles and other shapes and these can be coloured in. A spreadsheet is one of the most powerful and useful of all computer programs. It is particularly used by business people who do a lot of calculations. It is based on the old paper-based spreadsheets that Accountants used a lot at one time. A spreadsheet is very simple to start using and once you get practice you can do lots more with it.
We can say lots of things about spreadsheet programs. The most important things to know are these:
Spreadsheets are bits of computer software that can be used

Toy aeroplanes, for example, might be used to show how real planes might fly in formation.
A working model of a steam engine might show how the steam from heated water can be made to make wheels rotate.
Spreadsheet models are usually tables of facts and figures showing the mathematical relationships in a situation.
Suppose you used a spreadsheet to plan a party, but had a limited budget, for example.
The result on screen could end up looking like the account you would get from the shop providing the food and drink.
By looking at this table, you might see that increasing the number of soft drinks you purchased might require you to decrease the number of cakes you bought.
