== == Your goldfish most likely has a swimbladder disorder/disease. This happens when the swim bladder, a gas filled organ that controls the fish's bouyancy by inflating or deflating, is unable to control itself and causes the fish to either stay at the bottom of the tank, float helplessly at the top, bob-around head first at the bottom, swim on its side, or swim upsidedown. A swimbladder problem can be caused by consipation, bacterial infection, poor water quality, physical damage to the swim bladder, or physical deformity of the swim bladder. This condition is sometimes hard to treat because its often hard to diagnose the cause before its to late. The first step to take with a fish that has a swim bladder disorder is to test the water quality of your tank. It is usually a good idea to move the affected fish into a 5-10 gallon hospital tank for observation/treatment to ensure that the other fish do not become sick also. A good first act of treatment for an unknown cause of a swim bladder disorder is to try feeding the fish a shelled thawed or cooked unsalted green pea (the green pea is a laxitive and will relieve your fishes swimbladder problem if it is constipated). If this does not help you may want to start the fish on a antibacterial medication. Do frequent water changes at this time because having good water quality will offer relief for the affected fish. Also lower the tanks levels so that is is about 1/2-2 inches above the fishes dorsal fin (this reduces pressure on the swim bladder causing the fish much relief). If the fish looks swollen that is often either the beginning stages of dropsy or a sign of constipation. If dropsy is suspected than you would want to start the fish on antibacterial medicated food soon! Often fish do not recover from a bacterial infection of the swim bladder. Bacterial infections will usually result in dropsy- which is almost impossible to cure.

Obviously your Betta fish is in bad condition. This may cause by internal injury or disease. In some cases, a fish may get this defect when the tank is lack of oxygen and it may lead to dysfunctioning of internal organ.

Fish can swim in all directions so if the movement is normal there is no reason to worry. If on the other hand, the fish is struggling to swim and can only swim sideways, then you have a fish that is terminally ill and IMO it should be euthanased ASAP.

It is DYING! Look after the poor thing properly! The basic rules for successfull fishkeeping are :- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. (A goldfish is a 10 inch fish) :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs to have 50% of its water replaced every week. The aforementioned are absolute neccessities if you wish to keep fish alive for any length of time, as is the knowledge of any special requirements for the species of fish you wish to keep.

The commonest reasons for carp type fish behaving erratically are either they are breeding or their water is badly poisoned. If you want to keep fish succesfully you should observe the basic rules of successfull fish keeping. They are . :- 1 inch of fish must have at least 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank must have a permanently running 'cycled' filter. :- Every tank must have at least 50% of its water replaced every week.

This will be due to two main factors; firstly, one fancy goldfish needs at minimum a 20 gallon aquarium on it's own. Not just because of it's potential adult size, but also due to being such messy fish who produce a high amount of waste.
Secondly, this is likely due to the water in the bowl being toxic. If you are unable to upgrade your tank right away, it's actually best for your fish to be returned to the store, and you can get a betta for your bowl instead.

Why does your Siamese fighting fish swim sideways?

It may be because the main source of light is from the side and the fish is trying to balance itself and make sense of the light source in its autonomous systems. It is more likely however that the fish has a swim bladder problem. If this is so, then to the best of my knowledge there is no reliable cure/treatment and the fish is best euthanased.
