A horses ears are sensitive and easily injured. In the wild a horse relies on three senses for survival, sight, sound and smell, so if his ears are damaged it may impair his hearing and this could be life threatening. Domesticated horses have all the same survival instincts.

All horses are naturally protective of their eyes, ears and feet. Part of the initial handling of a young horse is to desensitize them to human touch, so that the horse will allow people to handle any part of them without fuss, however, rough handling can strengthen the natural survival instinct and the horse will resent any handling of these areas
