Why would a man give a woman an engagement ring but not want to talk about a wedding date?

Some men give a woman an engagement ring leading her to believe that one day they will marry only to put it off because he wants a sexual relationship without commitment. In this case the woman involved should sit down and communicate the fact that he either wants to marry her or not and if he says he does then set a wedding date. Other men get engaged because often women will push the man into getting engaged in hopes of marrying while yet other men do get engaged with good intentions, but get cold feet.
