There were many safe houses for the salves to hide on the Underground Railroad. Helpers would have special homes that the slaves would sleep in for a short time, even hours, and then they would go on to the next.
she would go back for them at night and then help then to freedom
The underground railroad wasn't really a "railroad". It had a deeper meaning. The "underground railroad" was the hope that slaves may one day escape and the actions of those who helped slaves escape into freedom. People from the southern states that sympathized with the slaves helped them escape moving north. Slaves were not safe even in states that outlawed slavery because of the Fugitive Slave Act. They had to continue to Canada.

The Underground Railroad is a series of above ground escape routes to help slaves escape to freedom. A slave would go to one house called a station and hide in a celler, attic etc. for the day. Then during the night slaves would ride by carriage, wagon, train or boat until they got to the next station. They did this until they reached freedom.
