The underground railroad were a series of underground passages that led to "safe houses" for the slaves. The slaves could stop at these houses for food and rest without fear of being turned in. The passages, or underground railroad, led to states where slavery was illegal and therefore they gained their freedom.
i think it might be so the public dident see them cause they might of not known or they could of been revulting for the people to see and they dident want to see them or the owner could be keeping them illegaly Well... First of all the Underground Railroad was not underground or a railroad. Slaves gave it that name to trick the whites. Slave traveled through the "Underground Railroad" because they wanted to escape slaery without being caught. Some slaves were caught, but there were thousands that weren't.

many northerners learned about slavery by personal contact with slaves.
Harriet Tubman built the underground railroad for the slaves to take a path so the slaves could escape and their owners won't catch them or beat them. Its just like the song follow the drinking gourd and the slaves had to follow the north star and see the drinking gourds its really good if you travel at night because its easier and darker and the masters won't catch them.
no it wasn't i was just a secret code. No, the Underground Railroad was neither underground nor a railroad. It was called "underground" because slave owners could never find out how or when slaves escaped. The slave owners claimed it must be underground since they could never see the slaves run off; however, the Underground Railroad was just extremely sneaky and never was underground.
the underground railroad is not actually a railroad, but a escape system back in the 1800's to help slaves escape. it was not fast, and it could sometimes take the slaves months to get to the north. they were after all, hiding in houses and traveling at night. (so don't try to see if you can get a ticket on the underground railroad!)
