I could think of at least a dozen toxins found in crude oil that could drop you like a rock, but the most relevant reason is what it does to the eco-structure A.K.A. the food chain. Crude oil is made up of different layers. The lighter crude floats on the sea and causes the spills you see. Any birds land in this and they're not going anywhere. The heavier oil sinks to the bottom in the form of Tar balls where it can lay or even wash ashore for generations to come and of course it is toxic to any life, plant or animal.

Oil spills happen when people make mistakes or are careless and cause an oil tanker to leak oil into the ocean. There are a few more ways an oil spill can occur.
