It might not be something you or I want as a career, but proctologists do save lives. Colon cancer is a serious disease, and early detection is crucial; there are also other diseases that affect the colon, and testing can reveal these diseases at an early enough stage, so that the person can make a full recovery. In our culture (and in many others), bodily functions like urination and defecation are often regarded with disgust or scorn, but doctors know these functions serve a crucial purpose, and if the body cannot eliminate waste properly, serious illness results.

Thus, proctologists are men and women who choose a specialty that is very necessary to human health. You and I may find the study of bodily functions kind of unpleasant, but doctors and researchers know such study is important, so they are able to set aside any personal discomfort and treat the colon as just one more part of the body that needs to be healthy.
