Most veterinarians have a personal love for and/or a fascination with animals. This passion and personal desire can make even the most meager working conditions (in any field) secondary to the pleasure of the work itself.

Also, physicians make a lot of money, but they also have very high professional liability costs and are on call a great deal of the time. Working with sick people can be stressful and challenging - in veterinary medicine if your patient snarls at you, the vet can muzzle the critter for safety. However, a pediatrician cannot slap Duct Tape over a biting child's mouth.

Finally, veterinarians are granted a great deal of respect in most situations - they are acknowledged by the general public as being medical professionals who are compassionate, intelligent and competent. The costs of attending veterinary school are being addressed by the AVAM and the veterinary schools in the United States, although relief from the cost has yet to materialize.

What if your child throws your cat?

Discipline your child. They should learn respect for animals, that is why you have pets to hopefully teach your children respect for them, not to harm them. Make sure your cat is ok and not limping or injured in anyway. If you don't know then take your cat into your Veterinarian. Take your child to the Shed :0).

When is a veterinarian mad?

For the most part, veterinarians tend to be pretty laid-back as far as losing their tempers go - there are some who can get mad quickly, but in general veterinarians have learned to control their emotions and not blow up at people. However, there are some situations that are likely to make a veterinarian mad, including animal abuse and abandonment, failure to follow medical instructions, blaming the veterinarian for a pet's illness or condition (without reason), not paying your bill and in general not treating the veterinarian, the veterinary staff or the animals with respect.
