The answer to this question can vary a good bit depending on when and where you mean by "more land". I will answer with which I know most about - the conquering of what is now the United States of America. First of all, in that time, basically whoever had the biggest army won the battle. So England had decided to travel to the far off lands in search of more land to own, in which they would reap the resources from so they could, well, have more resources! This gave the British more wealth (obviously) so they could hire, feed, train, and whatever else army people do so they would, as I first said, have a bigger and more powerful army. And, of course, everyone was power hungry back then (and still today). So that is why the British wanted more land in the America's. As always, there is a fair chance that I am wrong on this topic or that you were asking about a different time or place, so I encourage everyone who can to correct me if I am wrong and add to it if they can :) After all, I am only writing this based off of inferences and 5th grade Social Studies.
The British proclaimed that the land to the West of the Appalachian mountains was Indian land, not to be settled by the colonists. The proclamation was greatly resented by the colonists, many of whom disregarded it. It was one of many grievances that the colonists had against the English.
