Because it is 17 years old. You try getting a teenager to do some work and let me know how you go.
Replace the wiper circuit board. It went bad on both of our blazers. It isn't too expensive. Pretty easy to get to too.
Mercedes like other luxury car makers use lots of technology, My guess would be that your car has auto wiping or there is a sensor that indicates your car has stopped therefore stopping the wiper blades as well. Hope I helped

a bad fuse, control module (that little thing you use to turn on your wipers), or the windshield wiper motor is bad.
Sounds like your Wiper Motor may be going bad or you have a loose connection. I had that problem with my '91 APV. If I manually pulled on them they would start working but would eventually lock up again. They would also stop working when it was raining. It turned out to be a bad electrical connection in the wiper motor. If you wiggle the wires going into the wiper motor ( WATCH OUT FOR THE MOVING LINKAGE! ) you may find that that is the problem. Replace the motor and it should work.
sounds like your wiper motor is going bad. had the same thing happen on my 96 Chevy pick up. check your connection where your wires plug in. if that's not loose i would repace wiper motor.
It is not impossible but it would be a nightmare working out the electronics, and the transmission is not compatible
Fuse or windshield wiper motor.
Check the switch and make sure it is working. If it is, the problem may be the wiper motor itself, which will be located inside the rear panel on the back door...the wiper will be connected to it.
my odometer sometimes working sometimes not working
A common cause of the gas pedal not working on a Mercedes Benz is the throttle cable. There is a plastic piece in the middle that can break rather easily unfortunately.
