You ruined the alternator by disconnecting the battery while the car was running.
I have seen alternators survive this but it is very bad!
By the way this test procedure started damaging alternators in the 1960s when generators were phased out of production. This was a valid test procedure to see if the Generator was working before that time.
Depends on the vehicle, but normally it bolts to the engine. The negative is the ground cable.
The alternator is bad. The engine is running off of the battery and when you take the cable off it has no electrical power. If the alternator was working, the car would keep running. Be advised, doing this can damage a healthy alternator. This is not a good way to test the system.
The negative cable is removed first, then the positive. To re-connect, the positive goes first, then the negative.
you should have removed the negative cable. when reattaching positive cable, you have probably blown some electrical component. you now need to have amechanic or auto electrician look at it
Red is Positive (+) Black is Ground (-) If something is powered up when you connect the negative cable you will see a spark. Make sure the ignition is off and nothing is running off an auxiliary plug. The negative or ground cable will be connected to the engine block or chassis of the vehicle. The positive cable will be connected to the starter.
On a vehicle the red is positive (+) and the black is negative (-). If they are not color coded the cable connected to the starter is positive and the cable connected to the engine or chassis is negative.
The negative cable is attached to ground. On some cars is attached to the frame and on some it is attached to the engine.
If the loose cable is the main one from the negative side of the battery, then everything will flicker simultaneously with the key on and the engine stopped. When the engine is running, the alternator will keep things energized. If you have a loose groung cable on one particular accessory, only that accessory will flicker or just remain off.
Disconnect the negative battery cable for about a minute Disconnect the negative battery cable for a minute or so
Following the cables into the engine compartment. The positive cable will run to the alternator or the starter. The negative cable will just connect to a ground source (engine block, frame, etc.)
The vehicle battery's main purpose is to supply power for the starting system and to power some accessories when the engine is not running. The proper procedure for changing or installing a battery... remove the battery cable first from the negative battery terminal, then from the positive. Install opposite, attach the positive cable lead, then the negative.
Connect the positive + red charger cable to the positive + red battery post. Then connect the negative - black charger cable to the engine somewhere. Most engines have something metal sticking up that you can connect to. Do not connect the negative charge cable to the negative battery post, always connect it to the engine.
