The alternator is bad. The engine is running off of the battery and when you take the cable off it has no electrical power. If the alternator was working, the car would keep running.
Be advised, doing this can damage a healthy alternator. This is not a good way to test the system.
Follow the large wire from the battery. On the right side of the engine, underneath attached to the bell housing. If the engine is a 302 PLEASE DISCONNECT THE BATTERY before working on the starter as the big cable is live as it is connected directly to the battery.
Yes, a loose battery cable will prevent the alternator from charging the battery. The drain on the battery is not caused by the engine not running unless an accessory is left on. Most likely, the drain is caused by accessories (radio, lights, etc) while the engine is running due to the battery not receiving its charge from the alternator and then not having enough charge left to start the engine.
Either will work.
YES always disconnect the negative cable from the battery first then just be careful to hook up the negative cable to the battery as the last step
Look at the lower section of engine - follow + battery cable
Look on the rear lower end of engine Follow + battery cable Look on the rear lower end of engine Follow + battery cable Look on the rear lower end of engine Follow + battery cable
the cable is located at the top of the engine behind the throtle body if it is a 4.6L V8.
You can connect the battery ground cable to the frame of the vehicle or to the engine.
The battery on an Audi Q7 is changed by loosening and removing the cable. The retaining straps are then removed, the old battery removed, and the new battery put in its place.
would a bad battery cable in a 95 toyota corolla make a engine come on?
Probably at the lower rear section of engine - follow the + battery cable Probably at the lower rear section of engine - follow the + battery cable
the battery will have a - mark on it which means neg., and the cable that is bolted to the engine block is the neg. cable, the pos. cable will go to the starter.
Look at the lower rear end of the engine - follow the + battery cable Look at the lower rear end of the engine - follow the + battery cable
you should have removed the negative cable. when reattaching positive cable, you have probably blown some electrical component. you now need to have amechanic or auto electrician look at it
If the engine turns over but will not start your battery cable is NOT the problem. Even if it stated after reattaching the cable. Something else was the problem. If the engine will not turn over then the cable might be your problem. If you took off the cable and then reattached it and then the engine turned over then your cable was not making a good connection with the battery terminal and by reattaching it you improved the connection.
Answer Red cable (+) goes to starter solenoid and Positive side of battery Black (-) cable goes to engine ground. When disconnecting a battery always disconnect the ground cable from the battery first. When connecting a battery always connect the ground cable to the battery last.
If the alternator is charging at full capacity it probably should not but, some cars do have a closed circuit and if you open the circuit by removing a wire the car will shut down.
