Answer Red cable (+) goes to starter solenoid and Positive side of battery Black (-) cable goes to engine ground.
When disconnecting a battery always disconnect the ground cable from the battery first. When connecting a battery always connect the ground cable to the battery last.
Somewhere in the engine compartment ( battery side ) you will find an EEC TEST connection for your OBD I / EEC - IV system

take the truck to your local ford dealer. they can hook up their scan tool and read the code.
un hook the battery then rehook battery should reset if not then bad sensor some where

disconnect the 97 Thunderbirds battery cables. Find the battery hold down and remove it. Lift the battery out, then lower the new one in. Install the clamp and hook up the cables.
Yeah, you can hook it to the battery. If you do that be sure to hook it to a switch with a nice bright LED or a line that is only active when the key is turned. I made the mistake of not doing that a few years ago and the fan ran until my battery went dry.
