Well if your engine temp inside the dash is cooler than you think it would normally read than I would assume 1 of 2 things, first of all check to make sure you have coolant in your reservoir. If that checks out than it would probably (based on my past experiences) be your engine's thermostat is stuck in the open position (explaining why the engine temp reader is always cold & why no heat comes out inside the car), if it were to be stuck while closed than you would have much worse (potentially) problems. Worst case here would be, as you are already experiencing, not having proper (if any) heat. They are about $10-$15 for the part alone around here (midwest), however if you're in the southwest I know they use a lesser grade of about 165 so it may be cheaper. If you don't know how to go about installing it I'd recommend just having a mechanic do it, it's fairly quick. Hope this helps!

Low coolant in the system. Defective heater control valve. Clogged heater core.
The heater valve could be failing to open for one reason or another.
$400 to $500 or more if the vehicle has AC, would be my guess.
Check Antifreeze level..make sure there are no leaks under the vehicle.
Depends where you live but I would guesstimate between $400 and $800.
Either a faulty thermostat or you have a low coolant level.
Yes
yes, 82-93 are the same besides grill design
the 1996 and 1997 are the same and would not work in your 2000 straight from GM
That would be the 4L60E

The switch or wiring has an intermittent connection. Try shaking the switch knob to see if the fan turns on and off. If it does then the switch is bad.
