Why are alloys developed?

Alloys are "mixtures" of metals or non-metals in metals. They are developed to create new characteristics of the metals. Carbon (and other things) added to iron makes steel. Precise mixtures makes different sorts of steel alloy. Steel is stronger than iron and can have many characteristics which give superior properties for specific purposes. There is a virtual infinite number of alloys which could be made. Not all will have useful characteristics.

What is a mix of metals called?

A mixture of two or more metals is called an alloy. Alloys make sure that the end product has the combined desirable qualities of each of the metals that have been used.

What advantage to smart alloys have over ordinary metals?

A smart alloy, also called a shape memory alloy, returns to its original shape when heated. They can be used to make solid-state actuators and have numerous applications in the medical and aerospace industries.=== === a normal alloy (like steel) with special qualities. they can bend back into their original shape after being bent. They are used in medical operations and dental braces. They are newly developed so are quite expensive. What is an alloy?Pure metals are too soft for many uses. To make metals harder we mix them together to make alloys. Useful alloys include:-the copper alloys, bronze and brass-steel, which is an alloy of iron, other metals and the non-metallic element carbon.

What is an alloy and why is it good to use in a pratical?

An alloy is a mixture of metals (or metals with other elements such as carbon). Why you might use them in a practical depends on what you are trying to find out. It would be unlikely that you would use them in simple chemical reactions as you usually want pure substances for that. I wonder if you mean why are they good for practical applications? They often behave in different ways from their constituents and these behaviours make them useful. For instance a mixture of lead and tin melts very easily so it's used for solder. Steels are alloys of iron with carbon and other metals and can be made with a wide range of useful properties.

Why does manufacturing alloys make a more beneficial metal?

Alloys have improved mechanical properties, hardness, resistance to corrosion, resistance to heating, stable crystalline structure etc. compared with pure metals.

Why are alloys prepared?

Alloys have useful properties that are not found in the pure metals from which they are mixed. You can make alloys that are stronger, lighter, more corrosion resistant, and so forth, as compared to pure metals at a comparable price range.

Explain why other elements are often mixed with metals to make alloys?

Alloys have improved features compared with single metals.

What metals are used to make engine cylinder?

alloys

What are alloys and their purpose?

the mixing of diffrent kinds of metals to make the metals more handy.

Element used to make alloys?

Alloys are mixtures of metals, such as sterling silver, which is an alloy of silver and copper.

Lanthanides are mixed with more common metals to make?

alloys

Why are many metals used as alloys?

alloys are probably cheaper to make and stonger then an element or a simple metal. Alloys are easier to make. It is difficult to find a simple metal.

What are three steps in obtaining a metal from its ore?

1. Rock must crushed and separated into useful metal and ore 2. Magnets are used to separate some of the metals 3. The rock is then mixed with other metals to make alloys that have more useful physical and chemical properties

Can other metals be added to aluminum to make aluminum alloys?

Yes.

What elements are in alloys?

Alloys are made from a mixture of metals that are usually melted together. In this way brass, pewter, bronze are made. An amalgam which is also an alloy, is easier to make because mercury is a liquid at room temperature and metals dissolve in it.
