Why not? I know the first time I hurt an animal I didn't realize that I was hurting it. But to answer why, I would say: curiosity, boredom, anger towards a different object and it is taken out on the animal. I would even go as far as saying that some people have a chemical imbalance and just do it for GP (General Principle).
