In medieval times, few other than the clergy would have been able to read The Bible, because even kings and nobles were often illiterate. Moreover, the Bible was available in Greek and Latin, but not in any of the vernacular languages.

On the basis that knowledge is power, the Bible was the source of power for the clergy. Being able to quote just the right passage enabled the clergy to silence their critics and even bring secular rulers to heel. Correct interpretation of the Bible enabled lesser clergy to win favour and progress up the hierarchy of the Church.

Public demonstration of a life of piety and dedication of time to the Bible earned the respect of those who could not read the Bible or who did not have the time or inclination to do so.
