The cheapest, easiest thing to try first is a different new bulb, it may sound silly, but on rare occasions a new bulb can be faulty. Don't tear things apart first and then find this out. If it isn't the bulb, it must then be the wiring between the two sides. Find the wiring and look for anything that could cause a short or be a break. It may not always be visible, so a continuity test should be done to the two wires that power the reverse lights as well. Once the problem is found, repair it as necessary and the lights should function as normal.

The bulbs should be checked on a 1993 Dodge Dakota if the taillights are not working. The plugs on the trailer package should also be checked to make sure that they are working.
I changed my tps sensor on my 2001 Dakota and it solved this problem.
When working on a car engine, a diagram helps to make sure things are fixed or changed correctly. The diagram for the 1993 Dodge Dakota engine can be found in its maintenance manual.
