New Mexico is the last of the Western states to be overrun with ex-Californians and New Yorkers. (They're here, but mainly confined to a couple of areas.) Going hiking and not seeing another person is the RULE here, not the exception. There are huge unspoiled tracks of land. About 1/3 of the state is mountainous, with several ski areas...very little is the kind of traditional desert you would see in AZ. Much of the state is what is considered "high desert," meaning it's above 5000', but doesn't get much moisture. Instead of cactus, we have pinon trees.

Just find the pro's and con's of living in Mexico. Most probably, they want to live there due to cheaper living costs and warmer climate. If they want to live in a city close to the border such as Matamoros or Juarez, violence would be a major deterrent. On the other hand, there are plenty of beautiful and safe cities in Mexico, so why do you try to stop them from being happy? See related links for a couple of fine cities to live in Mexico.
