Firstly, it was after Great Britain before Russia, and the reasoning was that G-B was to strong a power for Germany to conquer easily, and since they were the only country left on the west side of Europe, they had no choice but to go to the east side, and in the end, they ended up conquering many countries on the east side and got quite a bit of Russia (the part in Europe). in the end, the Russians got the upper hand due to the harsh winters, and the fact that Siberians were trained to fight in harsh conditions.
