Why would smoke come from the vents by the dash of a Pontiac Grand Am SE V6 but when you opened the hood there was no smoke there and no more smoke inside?

If you also notice a "sweet" smell to it (antifreeze), it's the heater core leaking. Replace the heater core with a new one. If there's no smell at all and it also happens to be very humid, it could be condensation. Especially when running full cold on A/C. Which means the unit is functioning normally. In some cases visible condensation is also bad, because its indicative of drainage being plugged up somewhere or water getting in somewhere.

If it is white smoke and it is coming out of the exhaust then it is possibly a blown head gasket, the white smoke is from water getting into the engine. some times you can check by taking the radiator cap offand turning the engine over, if water shoots out then its a blown head gasket. at least that's what my Nissan did.
