The toilet part makes perfect sense if you have 15 people with no money living in a home that has one bathroom. My first house was 105 years old and had one. The real estate agent told me a lot of older places in the area had basement toilets because immigrants would move in with their entire extended family. The pipes could be cut below the bathroom and added onto very cheaply and quickly. Maybe that was the only way it fit over the existing Plumbing, or things were changed around in the house after it was installed. (Mine was useful as the Men's room when I threw parties!)
