they were nice so the red cross could not say that they were not following the Geneva convention, not treating POWs well

The Nazis used post cards from the concentration prisoners to find more Jews. __ Most of the postcards would not have been sent to any Jews in hiding. This would have been foolish. Most of the postcards, that were sent to Jews, were sent to addresses in Ghettos. Some postcards were supplied to the concentration camp prisoners to use to acknowledging the receipt of red cross parcels. Others had a more sinister purpose. Some prisoners had to send them to relatives still in the ghetos, what was written on them dictated by the SS. They basically said I am fine, I've arrived fine and then the writers were sent for extermination. It is thought they were done to try and hide the genocide from the general population. Sometimes the postcards were just that. Quick notes sent to people outside the camp to let them know they were still alive.

Another possibility is that afterwords they were boarded onto a train and then sent to extermination camps where they had horrific tests done on them. The prisoners in a concentration camp died of starvation or were eventually gassed, shot down, ETC. An example of the horrific tests done on prisoners was how Dr. Josef Mengele killed 1.5 million kids. He favored twins and would give them treats while taking there blood, and would form tests on them which would involve surgeries without any anesthesia.

Yes, either that or some other system for housing large numbers of prisoners. But, as it was the Nazis who were in power they would chose who to imprison, and perhaps were unjust in their choice.
What is ironic about this phrase Auschwitz?
The phrase was used by the Nazis purposefully so that the people coming there would think that it was a work camp and that there was a possibility that they would someday be released if they were cooperative and worked. There were thousands and thousands of Jews arriving each and every day. There were not enough German guards to contain them if they decided to riot and overthrow the Germans. So the phrase was used as a purposeful deception - and, unfortunately, it worked. The phrase is tragically ironic in that Nazi scientists planned out the diets of the prisoners at camps like Auschwitz. The prisoners were given just below the amount required to survive. As they worked, they were using these calories. As long as the prisoners worked, they were dying a death of slow starvation. The only liberty planned for the prisoners was death, and the work done at Auschwitz was the easiest way for the Nazis to reach that goal.

Aebeit macht frei means "Work makes you free" To the nazis this mean if you work then you wouldn't be killed and if you didnt work then you would be killed. They used this slogan as a way to force the prisoners in the camps to work hard or die. This has a pyschological effect on the prisoners in the camps because they were scared of being killed
