Because there's really just one big ocean. A fish would be able to travel ANYWHERE in it.
well, because of Pangaea, the continents where in a huge "blob" so when the first fish where created, there where some on the eastern south America and western Africa, when the continents moved apart with the time, there where still some fossils of those specific animals, ocean animals in this case...

The scientists that found the fossils found that were found on different continents. Some of the same fossil were located on each Continent that could only survive in one climate. Therefore, a fossil provided some evidence for the continental drift to be true.

The existence in the fossil record of the same land species on several continents. Since these animals are not seafaring then the continents must have been connected at one time. Also continental drift is supported by vast empirical evidence.

Wegner developed this theory not only because many continents appear to fit together like a jigsaw, but also because he had fossil and climate evidence to support the fact that the continents once fit together.
the continents fit the locations on the mountain ranges the congruent types of rocks and the same fossil exists on different continents. Hope this helped. :)
