Veins in the brain do not contain one-way valves and the blood is pulled down by the force of gravity. Lack of blood to the brain will result in fainting. To combat this, be sure to contract your calf muscles to pump blood back up into the abdominal cavity and contract your neck muscles regularly to encourage blood to flow upwards.

Because standing still for so long cramps up all your muscles and blood does not flow properly and this starves your brain of much needed oxygen so as a defence it shuts down to protect it from damage. It can also be because you are dehydrated or more commonly among soldiers, hungover.
