The client does include some patches, but when you install it, it will auto-update incrementally to the latest patch. This means if the client you install or download is v3.1, then the client will auto-update to 3.2, 3.2.2, 3.3, etc etc, up to the current version.
When you install World of Warcraft, it installs all patches, even the ones for expansions (yes even if your account is a vanilla account). It will take about 15 gigabytes of disk space to install WoW.
World of Warcraft will always download patches automatically. There is no way around it. You can always use the background downloader to pre-download large patches ahead of time, but this does not always work as sometimes patches are released really fast to fix a bug in the code.

Patches are downloaded to the main wow directory. After they are downloaded, they are applied. Once they are applied, they can be deleted if you want, but not deleting them makes it easier to repair/re-install should the need arise.

Patches are automatically downloaded and installed when released and as needed by the client. You do not have to do anything. IF the patch does not install you can email the company and they should send you a link to download the patch, or you can get it off the game's site.
