A firewall blocks or allows certain programs from accessing the internet. It can also be allowed to only deliver content that was sent to explicitly to your IP address. That means if you didn't request a page it will ignore that page and not show you the "pop up" or whatever was being sent.

A firewall protects a computer by stopping malware and viruses from getting through onto it. A firewall does need regular updating to make sure it is up to date with the latest viruses and other programs that can otherwise take over the computer or damage it beyond repair.

So a virus can have a hell of a hard time trying to get through to your software. The better the firewall, the more protected you are from viruses, spyware, and Norton.

Why firewall is called as computer hardware?

to understand this question, we must first understand what a firewall does. A firewall is a security system that limits the exposure of a computer or computer network to attack from crackers. This means that all a firewall does is prevent other computers from easily accessing it. If you have a software that is a firewall, then it is looking for hackers trying to get into your computer and terminating those connections. A hardware firewall could be anything, such as a router. A router is a great example of a firewall because it turns all the connections from your public IP address and assigns each computer it is connected to a private ip address, making it hard for hackers to access you computer. Your computer itself may also have something similar in it which would be considered a firewall.

Computer firewall is a security software which acts as a barrier and protects the system from black-hat intrusion attempts. Firewalls also block communication attempts into or out of your computer; certain types of malware or software bots that attempt to send or receive data messages will be blocked. A firewall program is your computers perimeter fence, designed to keep bad guys out, and to prevent data passing into/out of your computer. Firewalls are configured in software and hardware devices with specific criteria to block or prevent unauthorized access. It has the packet filtering mechanism which checks for the packets that contain data, prevents or blocks it depending upon the rules programmed in it. Reference source: personalfirewall.comodo.com

Can a network application be loaded in a local computer and be accessed from a remote computer?

An application which is running on a local machine may listen on network ports for connections from remote machines. The machine may have firewall software, and the network may have firewall hardware, intended to prevent remote machines from being able to connect, so the answer is yes and no. Assuming you can run the program on the local machine and it is able to listen on an appropriate port, and the remote computer knows how to connect to the local machine, and is permitted to access by any security software and hardware, then yes.
