There are lots of reasons. Basically though, it is because quite often the column is not wide enough to hold the data that is entered into it. If the next cell to the right is empty, it would spill out over it. If something is in the next cell to the right, then what is in the first cell will not be seen in full. So the column needs to be widened to enable it be seen in full.
