More of the car is being used. It's not hot where you're sitting but the inside of the car has to use more fuel making it hotter.

The air conditioner pump on a car is a large load on the engine causing the engine to work harder thus creating more heat. Typically, in most cars, the electric fan at the radiator comes on and stays on as long as the air conditioning is on, this is to remove the excess heat from the engine. This is easy to check, with the engine running and warmed up, have someone turn on the air conditioning while you are watching the radiator fan. It should come on within a few seconds and stay on. With the air conditioning off, the fan should cycle on and off when the engine is warm. If the fan doesn't come on at all, you might have a blown fuse, wiring problem or a temperature sensor in the cooling system has gone bad. Before doing all this, ensure the anti-freeze is topped up (when the engine is cold only) in the radiator and the overflow bottle.

What is the purpose of temperature sensor in car?

What cause cars to overheat with air conditioner on?

A car is more likely to overheat with the AC on because the AC radiator is in front of the cars radiator expelling heat. so if the engines cooling system is operating near capacity for some reason the heat coming from the AC can be just enough to tip it over the edge. The engine also has to work a Little harder while the Ac is running which would not help either.

Does a car AC heating function the same way as normal room ACs or Split Units operate such as in reverse cooling operation?

All car ac's work like most any other ac. I don't know of any car ac's that work like heat pumps that both heat and cool. Every car I have seen provides heat thru a heating core which is heated from the water circulated from the engine. , EzForJesus

What does the heater control switch do?

It adjusts the heat in the car so you can control your AC and heat to the temperature you like.
