Bridges are used to connect two physically separated pieces of the same network.
Bridge mode allows to connect to geographically separate piece of the same network together. For instance you have one piece of the network in one building and another one in another building. You can't use a cable to connect them together. In such situation you might have to use a bridge.

No a bridge will transmit all network protocols to all ports, without restriction; thus the term "Bridge." A Router in true bridge mode will do the same, unless you implement some form of route management (managed bridge / router).
Arch Bridge. Main use is road traffic.
A bridge is a way to connect two networks. For example, if a user has two or more computers connected to a wired network, and one of those wired computers is connected to a wireless network, the computer connected to both the wired and wireless networks could be used as a bridge. With the bridged networks, the wired computers could access the wireless network.
bridge is designed for use between LANs that use identical protocols for the physcial and link layer.

A network bridge just expands the number of computers that can be connected to the router.

I have seen this issue, and I will try to help you. First off, a "network bridge" serves to connect your computer to multiple networks. However, a network bridge is not your "internet connection." You can remove this and still use the internet. If you use your computer on two networks simultaneously (rare) then a network bridge will let you share files over, or use the internet connection of two networks. Most home users only need to be part of one home network MSHOME or WORKGROUP. (to see which domain or network you are part of go to Control Panel -> System -> Computer Name) Sometimes, if you right click on the Network Bridge Icon, and you get an error message when trying to delete or disable the network. First, make sure you have administrator privileges. (You are the "administrator" if you can go to the Start -> Control Panel and edit Windows firewall.) A quick and dirty way to remove the bridge is to go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager delete the Mac Miniport Bridge. Then, the "network bridge" icon in "connections" should disapear. If you encounter anymore problems, please use one of the many FREE spyware/virus scanners such as AVG, adaware, or spybot S&D to make sure you don't have a backdoor Trojan installed. Goodluck
Yes, it is possible to use a laptop as a wireless bridge for xbox live.

Some network hubs have them installed for protection
Although some would suggest that a switch could segment a network (and it does use the MAC address for switching) more properly a bridge would be the answer if you are speaking of segmenting a network.
Each building in a wireless network uses a bridge.
If you do not set password for your wireless network you will get unsecured network. If you mean that you want use your router to connect to another unsecured wireless network and create so called "bridge" the answer is yes. But! Router from different manufactures usually do not work together in the bridge configuration. There are some exceptions but just few.
You can use so called "Bridge" which allows you to extend networks wirelessly. You have to have at least two routers better from the same manufacture with the bridge function support.
